Reception

Chrono Odyssey has no reviews because it is unreleased. Its only public test, the June 2025 closed beta, drew more than 65,000 concurrent players on Steam (SteamDB, as reported by MassivelyOP) and mixed impressions: praise for the world, the Chronotector and the character creator, and criticism of performance, animation and enemy AI, with many comparisons to New World.

Chrono Odyssey has no reviews and no review score, because it has not been released; everything said about it comes from its one public test, the closed beta on Steam from Jun 20 to 22, 2025. That beta drew more than 65,000 concurrent players on Jun 21, 2025 (SteamDB, as reported by MassivelyOP) and mixed impressions. Press and players praised the world, the Chronotector and the character creator, criticized performance, animation and enemy AI, and often compared it with Amazon's New World. Here, in SpookyFairy's capture of the beta's opening battle, the player is thrown into a fight at once ("So many things. Where am I attacking?"). The developers have been reworking the game since; see Developer Notes. No build newer than the beta has been played by press or the public, as of Oct 21, 2026.

Numbers

Interest ran high before the beta. Sign-ups passed 400,000 by May 19, 2025 (MassivelyOP) and 1 million by Jun 6, 2025 (Kakao Games). Asked by the creator Kanon how many players he expected, executive producer Yun Sang-tae says "around one million participants", based on "the impact and views" of the videos so far. On its Aug 6, 2025 earnings call, Kakao Games said applicants had come close to 2 million from many regions, and that Chrono Odyssey had over 1 million Steam wishlists, about 20th on Steam (Today Korea); these are the company's own figures, not a dated Steam chart.

During the test, Steam showed more than 65,000 concurrent players at the peak on Saturday, Jun 21, 2025, as MassivelyOP reported from SteamDB. The beta ran as a separate Steam Playtest app, so the store page has no player history of its own. Servers were expanded during the first day and the North American servers needed maintenance on Jun 21 (Steam). There are no sales figures, because the game is not on sale. Details of the test are on Closed Beta.

What the press praised

The character creator drew the most consistent praise. MassivelyOP's Tyler F.M. Edwards wrote that it is "raising the bar" (MassivelyOP, Jun 12, 2025), and SpookyFairy, rolling random faces in the beta's creator, settles on one with "I actually like that". The freedom had a cost: some testers made grotesque characters, and Chrono Studio's CEO Bae Bong-gun said "It was honestly heartbreaking" and promised "meaningful limitations" in the next test (MassivelyOP, Jun 26, 2025). See Character Creation.

The Chronotector and the world were the other strengths. Noisy Pixel's Kyle Clark called the Chronotector "where Chrono Odyssey sets itself apart" and the game "downright stunning" in Unreal Engine 5, though heavy on PCs (Noisy Pixel, Jun 13, 2025). MeinMMO's Karsten Scholz found exploration rewarding in the way of Elden Ring (MeinMMO, Jun 25, 2025), and TheGamer's Harry Alston wrote that "combat is otherwise excellent" (TheGamer, Jun 23, 2025). Korea's Byline Network summed up the reaction as "well-made" but "difficult" (Byline Network, Jun 20, 2025). MassivelyOP, by contrast, found the Chronotector's upgrades "mostly just standard abilities". The device is on Chronotector.

What the press criticized

Animation and feel were the most common complaints. MassivelyOP's first impressions, titled "Chrono Odyssey feels like a jankier New World", said characters run as if "floating across the ground like a figure skater" and concluded "it needs a lot more time to cook" (MassivelyOP); SpookyFairy, moving through the beta's first region, remarks "Bit of floaty." TheGamer's Jack Coleman reported players complaining of performance problems, janky animations and poor enemy AI (TheGamer, Jun 20, 2025), and Harry Alston wrote that "The game looks absolutely nothing like its trailers" (TheGamer). MeinMMO said graphics, animation, AI and performance needed urgent optimization and polish.

Performance hurt many players. The developers later admitted "cases where the game struggled to run smoothly even on higher-end PCs" (Steam, Sep 22, 2026). See Performance and Optimization.

Difficulty spikes came early. MassivelyOP found the first story boss "just felt numerically impossible to defeat"; SpookyFairy, entering the first Chrono Gate about half an hour in with one ability, is beaten at once and says "Didn't even know what hit me." The developers later moved the first Chrono Gate from about level 3 to level 5 and added an optional NPC helper; see Chrono Gates.

The New World comparison

The comparison with Amazon's New World followed the beta everywhere. MassivelyOP's preview headline made it, and its news report of Jun 23, 2025 called the reception mixed, "with comparisons to New World" (MassivelyOP). TheGamer's Lou Larsen reported players accusing the developers of copying New World in weapon swapping, crafting stations, gathering and forts (TheGamer, Jun 23, 2025). The developers have not answered the charge directly; their rework since focuses on combat, progression and performance.

Creators

Creators asked the questions Western players care about. Kanon, who had played a private test before the beta, opened his monetization questions by saying that "every single Korean company has a terrible reputation when it comes to monetization in the west"; Yun Sang-tae answered that there will be "absolutely no pay-to-win", with cosmetics and a battle pass only. Whether that holds cannot be judged until launch. The business model is on Price and Business Model.

Kanon also praised the developers' openness: they held a Discord call with a translator after his test, which he calls the first time he saw Korean developers seek Western feedback that directly. Kakao Games ran a creator program, Kakao Games PARTNERS, for the beta, and creators streamed it freely because there was no NDA (Steam).

The developers' own reading

Chrono Studio summed up "thousands of pieces of feedback" on Jul 2, 2025 (Steam). Testers, it said, found Setera "immersive and worth exploring", the Chronotector "unique", character customization rich, and the core gameplay "solid" with "strong potential"; they wanted performance stability, better combat feedback and animation, clearer quests and map guidance, and a more intuitive interface with better controller support on PC. Kakao Games' then-CEO Han Sang-woo told investors on Aug 6, 2025 that the beta had confirmed the game's global potential, with its cosmic horror world and soulslike combat praised (Today Korea), and the same day delayed the launch by about a year to raise its completeness (Gamemeca). MassivelyOP read the delay as a sign that "reception to the CBT was apparently so rough" that a dramatic revamp followed (MassivelyOP, Aug 6, 2025).

How the rework answers it

Most of the developer notes since the beta answer the criticism point by point: hit feedback traced to "packet desyncs between the client and the server" (Jul 4, 2025), controls split for keyboard and controller (Jul 30, 2025), about 40% fewer shader calls per frame (Dec 25, 2025), free movement and Guard Crush (Jan 29, 2026), and PC benchmarking with Quasar Zone (Sep 22, 2026). None of it has been tested by players, and no second test is dated, as of Oct 21, 2026. Today's status is on Release Date.
