Performance and Optimization

Chrono Odyssey's June 2025 closed beta ran poorly for many players, with frame drops, stutter and crashes "even on higher-end PCs". Chrono Studio has since cut shader calls per frame by about 40% and average memory use by about 20% (Dec 2025) and, in Sep 2026, began benchmarking the game with Quasar Zone to fix its PC performance and specs.

Chrono Odyssey's only public test, the June 2025 Closed Beta, struggled to run well: Chrono Studio itself wrote that players reported frame drops and crashes and that the game "struggled to run smoothly even on higher-end PCs". Since then the studio says it has cut shader calls per frame by about 40% and average memory use by about 20% (Dec 25, 2025), and in September 2026 it partnered with the Korean hardware community Quasar Zone to benchmark the game on many PCs. No build after the beta has been played outside the studio, so none of these gains has been measured by players, as of Oct 21, 2026. The game is built in Unreal Engine 5: at Epic's State of Unreal at GDC 2024 the studio showed how it builds its seamless world with World Partition, followed by a flight over Setera's hills and ridges.

Unreal Engine 5

Chrono Odyssey runs on Unreal Engine 5, but the developers say the engine is not the point. In the official Developer Interview #1 (May 23, 2025), executive producer Yun Sang-tae says the team "didn't develop Chrono Odyssey just to showcase our technology"; it chose Unreal Engine 5 "to bring the chaotic world of Setera to life", which is why it does not feel "the need to highlight the engine itself". The developer's own posts name three of the engine's systems: Nanite geometry, World Partition (which streams the open world in cells) and Temporal Super Resolution (TSR), Unreal's upscaler. Lumen, the engine's real-time lighting, has never been named by Chrono Studio.

The game was first shown as a technical showcase. Its five-minute talk at Epic's State of Unreal on Mar 20, 2024, uploaded by Unreal Engine, includes a slide reading "Shape your experience with data layers", then the editor view of a rider on a white horse in a green valley that switches to a darker, ruined version of the same place: Unreal's data layers are how the studio swaps one era of Setera for another. MassivelyOP wrote at the time that the GDC footage was "primarily focused on showcasing the visual grunt of Unreal Engine 5" (Mar 21, 2024).

What went wrong in the beta

Chrono Studio warned on the beta's first day, Jun 20, 2025, that players "may encounter performance issues such as FPS drops, network instability, or areas that require further optimization", and they did. SpookyFairy's first-evening recording shows the beta's graphics menu, where his global preset read Epic; he turned motion blur off, found no DLSS option and dropped the preset to High. Noisy Pixel's preview called the game "downright stunning" but wrote that the reviewer "cranked everything to max", then "dialed settings back after my PC's fans tried to launch into orbit" (Jun 13, 2025). TheGamer reported on Jun 20, 2025 that players were complaining of performance problems, and MeinMMO's Karsten Scholz wrote on Jun 25, 2025 that the game needed urgent work on optimization. The North American servers were unstable on Jun 20 and 21 and went down for maintenance on Jun 21.

The developer's own list of the beta's problems, in Developer's Notes #2 Part 2 (Jul 30, 2025), is specific. Frame rates were unstable in combat; certain skills and effects caused "noticeable frame drops", and so did large groups of players in party or raid content; frame drops in turn delayed skill inputs. Stutter came from delays in server-client synchronization, from loading new areas and from "real-time loading of world resources". Separately, the beta's sluggish, unregistered hits were blamed on "packet desyncs between the client and the server" (Jul 4, 2025), which is network lag rather than frame rate.

The fixes, note by note

Developer's Notes #2 Part I (Jul 4, 2025) set out the plan. "High-resolution Nanite geometry will only be applied where necessary", repeated assets move to instanced meshes to cut draw calls, and textures are consolidated into shared trim sheets. Collision data, previously loaded alongside every rendered object, will load only near the player, and unused World Partition cells will unload automatically. A dynamic loading system will scale to the hardware: wider areas and higher-quality assets on high-end PCs, nearby cells and lower-resolution assets on lower-end ones. Screen-space reflections give way to cubemaps, lights are trimmed, and TSR is retuned to reduce motion blur and ghosting.

Developer's Notes #2 Part 2 (Jul 30, 2025) added combat and network fixes: particle and effect calculations move from the CPU to the GPU, effects get distance-based detail levels, fewer effects spawn in fights, and "smaller zones and certain types of combat content will be migrated to dedicated servers". Players will also get a toggle to hide other players' skill effects in large fights such as field bosses.

Developer's Notes #3 (Dec 25, 2025) reported results. Removing unneeded mesh and material passes cut shader calls per frame by "approximately 40%", cleaning out unused assets lowered average memory use by "about 20%", and smoother landscape streaming reduced GPU usage swings in long sessions. Character rendering, "including equipment and hair", was optimized, and a new lighting system makes some areas darker to fit "the cosmic horror identity of Chrono Odyssey" while "maintaining stable overall performance". In a Discord Q&A in January 2026, Yun Sang-tae repeated that the visuals would stay high-quality while running better, "even on lower spec PCs", as MassivelyOP summed it up (Jan 16, 2026).

Developer's Notes #5 (May 7, 2026) added a multi-channel server system "to bolster server stability and manage player density", so that "high-performance gameplay is maintained even in crowded regions or during large-scale world events".

Developer's Notes #6 (Sep 22, 2026) was about PC performance alone. "Performance and stability were among the most common concerns raised during the Closed Beta Test," it says, and stable performance across "a wide range of PC hardware remains a key priority". Quasar Zone is testing the game on "various hardware configurations" for frame-rate stability and rendering performance; Newspim reports that the results will set new official specs and per-setting targets, including for entry-level and handheld PCs. Every change is listed on Developer Notes.

DLSS, FSR and ray tracing

Chrono Studio promised NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR in July 2025, "to enhance both performance and visual quality" on compatible cards; the beta had neither, only TSR. The developer has not said whether PC will have ray tracing, as of Oct 21, 2026. The Xbox store lists ray tracing, 4K, HDR10 and "60+ fps" among the Xbox Series X|S version's features, but no console performance or quality modes have been announced for Xbox or PlayStation 5.

What is not known

As of Oct 21, 2026: the final PC specs after Quasar Zone's testing, how the reworked build runs on any machine (nobody outside the studio has played it since June 2025), whether a second test will come before launch, the console modes, Steam Deck support, and whether DLSS and FSR arrive with frame generation. Kakao Games' newest window for the game is Q2 2027 (see Release Date).

Frequently asked questions

Why was the Chrono Odyssey beta so laggy? Chrono Studio blamed Chrono Odyssey's beta problems on several things: frame drops from skill effects and crowds, stutter from loading world resources in real time, and "packet desyncs between the client and the server" that made hits and dodges feel late. It said the game "struggled to run smoothly even on higher-end PCs" (Sep 22, 2026).

Will Chrono Odyssey run better at launch? Chrono Studio says Chrono Odyssey now uses about 40% fewer shader calls per frame and about 20% less memory on average than before (Dec 25, 2025), and it is benchmarking the game with Quasar Zone. No player has run a post-beta build, so the gains have not been tested outside the studio as of Oct 21, 2026.

Does Chrono Odyssey have DLSS? DLSS and FSR are planned for Chrono Odyssey (Developer's Notes, Jul 4, 2025) but were not in the June 2025 beta, which offered only Unreal Engine's Temporal Super Resolution.

Does Chrono Odyssey have ray tracing? Chrono Studio has not announced ray tracing for Chrono Odyssey on PC, as of Oct 21, 2026. The Xbox store lists ray tracing among the Xbox Series X|S version's features.

What engine does Chrono Odyssey use? Chrono Odyssey is built in Unreal Engine 5, using Nanite, World Partition and Temporal Super Resolution, and was shown at Epic's State of Unreal at GDC 2024.

What is the Quasar Zone partnership? In September 2026 Chrono Studio partnered with Quasar Zone, a Korean hardware community, to benchmark Chrono Odyssey on many PC configurations. The results are to set the game's official minimum and recommended specs.
