Swordsman
The Swordsman is Chrono Odyssey's all-round melee class, "Versatile warriors, peerless in both offense and defense", playable in the June 2025 closed beta with a sword and shield, a greatsword and dual blades, building rage with basic attacks.
The Swordsman is Chrono Odyssey's all-round melee class, described by Chrono Studio as "Versatile warriors, peerless in both offense and defense to control the flow of battle." It was one of the three classes playable in the closed beta of Jun 20 to 22, 2025, where SpookyFairy's capture of the class select reads it out after the Paladin and the Ranger. Its weapons in the beta were a sword and shield, a greatsword and dual blades, and it built rage with basic attacks and spent it on skills. Everything here describes that beta build: Chrono Studio has reworked combat and class progression since, and nothing newer has been played as of Oct 21, 2026. It is one of six Classes.

Role
The Swordsman is the class that can either hold the line or deal the damage, depending on its weapons. Chrono Studio's one-liner promises both offense and defense, and Tyler F.M. Edwards of MassivelyOP, who rerolled to a Swordsman during the press preview, found it much simpler and more enjoyable than the Ranger he started with. Before the beta, the official X account previewed its skills, which MassivelyOP reported as the "Warrior"; there is no Warrior class, and the clips were the Swordsman's.
Chrono Odyssey does not lock the Swordsman into tanking. Its developers said in June 2025 that tank, damage and healer classes exist, yet a party dungeon can be cleared even by three tanks or three healers, because weapon swaps and customization keep roles open.
Weapons
Sword and shield. The tanky option, though MassivelyOP noted it also looked buildable for damage. Icy Veins' class guide (as it read the beta) adds a timed Block that negates damage and leads into a counterattack that knocks enemies down (Icy Veins, Mar 31, 2026).
Greatsword. Slow and hard-hitting, a "glass cannon" in MassivelyOP's words. Icy Veins describes charged attacks and armor that lets the wielder push through hits to land a blow.
Dual blades. A mix of offense and defense with rapid attack speed, and Edwards' favorite of the three. Icy Veins lists parries, mobility and a burst of resource when you swap to them.
A Swordsman carries two of the three and swaps between them in a fight. In the beta only the sword and shield and the dual blades could block among the weapons MassivelyOP played, and blocking lowered damage rather than stopping it. See Weapons for swapping and the full list.
Rage
The Swordsman ran on rage in the beta: basic attacks built it, abilities spent it. MassivelyOP called it "a much simpler resource system" than the Ranger's three resources. Every class also used stamina for dodging, sprinting and blocking.
Skills in the closed beta
In the beta each weapon had its own skill tree and up to four active abilities, leveled by fighting with that weapon. Kanon put it to executive producer Yun Sang-tae on Jun 9, 2025 that the tree was small, even if two weapons "naturally gives you double the options"; Yun answered that the game was built to be "Easy to learn, hard to master", simple at first, with deeper builds to come. Every class also had an ultimate in the beta (Noisy Pixel, Jun 13, 2025); no preview described the Swordsman's.
Swapping is part of the kit. The official Developer Interview #1 says weapon swapping "will remain essential, even in endgame" and "also grants passive buffs", so a Swordsman can open with the greatsword and turn to sword and shield when a hit is coming.
The Matrix: four paths per weapon
After the beta, Chrono Studio announced the Matrix System, which gives every weapon four progression paths, twelve per class. "Even if two players are using the same weapon, their primary skills may differ." In January 2026 the executive producer gave counter-focused and back-attack-focused versions of a weapon's skills as examples. Chrono Studio has not published the Swordsman's paths, as of Oct 21, 2026.
What changed after the beta
Developer's Notes #2 Part 2 (Jul 30, 2025) said all classes "share similar roles (tank/healer/DPS), lacking distinct identity" and that the three weapons of each class were badly out of balance; the Matrix is the answer, and every class will be re-evaluated (Steam). Developer's Notes #4 (Jan 29, 2026) added Guard Crush, which matters most to a shield fighter: "Blocking attacks consumes stamina, and if your stamina drops to 0, a Guard Crush occurs", and hits from the side or rear break a block (Steam). See Combat.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Swordsman a tank in Chrono Odyssey? The Chrono Odyssey Swordsman can tank with its sword and shield, the tanky weapon of the June 2025 closed beta, but it can also deal damage with the greatsword or dual blades. The game does not lock any class into one role.
What weapons does the Swordsman use in Chrono Odyssey? In the June 2025 closed beta the Chrono Odyssey Swordsman used a sword and shield, a greatsword and dual blades, carrying two of them and swapping in combat.
What is the best Swordsman weapon in Chrono Odyssey? There is no reliable ranking: Chrono Odyssey's Swordsman was playable for only 72 hours in June 2025, and Chrono Studio admitted the three weapons of each class were unbalanced and is rebuilding them with the Matrix System. In that beta, MassivelyOP's writer liked the dual blades best.
Can the Swordsman heal in Chrono Odyssey? Nothing shown so far gives the Chrono Odyssey Swordsman a heal. The developer says support utility will come from weapons through Matrix paths, but has not described a Swordsman one, as of Oct 21, 2026.
How does rage work for the Swordsman in Chrono Odyssey? In the June 2025 closed beta of Chrono Odyssey, the Swordsman's basic attacks built rage, which its abilities then spent.
