Chronotector

The Chronotector is Chrono Odyssey's time device, "an artifact which allows players to stop time around monsters or rewind a character's time." It also reveals traces of the past, solves puzzles, opens hidden rewards and summons defeated bosses as specters; in the June 2025 closed beta it had five abilities.

The Chronotector is Chrono Odyssey's time device: Steam's store page calls it "an artifact which allows players to stop time around monsters or rewind a character's time, enabling more dynamic combat." In the June 2025 closed beta your character carried one from the opening scene. In the official Gameplay Walkthrough (Jun 12, 2025) the narrator calls it "a powerful artifact capable of manipulating time and space" that "will evolve with time and experience," while the footage shows a group of monsters frozen in amber light as the player cuts through them. Beyond combat it reveals traces of the past, solves puzzles, opens hidden rewards and summons defeated bosses as allies. Its abilities as players saw them come from the June 2025 closed beta, and the game has been reworked since, so the details may change before launch.

What the developers say it is

The Chronotector is the system Chrono Studio built the whole game around. "Many believed incorporating spacetime manipulation into an MMORPG was impossible, but we brought it to life through a system called the 'Chronotector'," executive producer Yun Sang-tae says in the official Developer Interview #1 (May 23, 2025). In his producer letter of Aug 8, 2024 he described it as "a device that manipulates time and space," and Steam lists it as one of the game's five headline features, beside the open world, dungeons, crafting and character creation.

Kakao Games told MassivelyOP on Jun 4, 2025 that its "many functions" work "as direct gameplay mechanics rather than being limited to the scenario," and that some hidden rewards in the world "can only be accessed using the Chronotector's abilities or through parkour."

Where the idea came from

The Chronotector was modeled on Zelda's Sheikah Slate. Asked by the creator Kanon which games inspired Chrono Odyssey (interview published Jun 9, 2025), Yun says the time travel came from the classic Chrono Trigger, and that "the equipment called the 'Chronotector,' which is exclusive to Chrono Odyssey, was inspired by the 'Sheikah Slate' from The Legend of Zelda." The same answer names Elden Ring as the model for the open world and combat.

Its place in the story

In the closed beta's opening, the Chronotector is what sends you back in time. SpookyFairy's capture of the first 35 minutes on PC (Jun 20, 2025) shows the cutscene: after the Void overruns the battle, a woman holds out the clock-like device, says it "is capable of turning back time," and tells the hero "I shall return you to the past." Noisy Pixel's preview (Jun 13, 2025) describes the same setup: the hero dies in the opening clash and is "hurled back twelve months" to try to change the future, and the Chronotector is "a watch-like device that grants time-manipulating tricks on top of your class abilities." Chrono Studio said on Jul 30, 2025 that the game's narrative "is currently undergoing a complete overhaul," so the opening may change. The world and its people are on Story.

Time stop and rewind in combat

In a fight, the Chronotector freezes enemies and undoes mistakes. The Official Gameplay Trailer (May 3, 2023) shows a character raise the device and a crowd of enemies turn into frozen white figures; its description promises "freezing time, rewinding events, and exploring further in ways you never thought possible." Before the beta, Kakao's press release said players could "chain devastating combos with time rewind and freeze mechanics" (Jun 6, 2025). In the beta, Noisy Pixel used Temporal Isolation to freeze an enemy and "line up a finisher," and Time Reversal, which "saved my skin more than once after a bad dodge." How the rest of the fighting works is on Combat.

Seeing the past

Out in the world, the Chronotector reads Setera's history. "With the Chronotector, players can trace remnants of the past or catch glimpses of the future," Yun says in Developer Interview #1; "while investigating ruins, they can manipulate time to reveal hidden paths or reconstruct past moments to discover entirely new routes." Inven's interview with the team before the beta (June 2025, in Korean) adds that it disarms gimmicks and finds the way through mazes, which ties it to the Labyrinths, and in the beta Temporal Resistance let you glide. Exploring and moving around is on Exploration and Traversal.

The five abilities in the closed beta

In the June 2025 closed beta the Chronotector had five abilities, named by Noisy Pixel and detailed in Icy Veins' guide (Feb 10, 2026). These are beta names and effects, as those two sources describe them; Chrono Studio has not published a list for launch as of Oct 21, 2026.

Temporal Isolation Freezes an enemy's movement for a set time
Time Reversal Returns you to your position and HP of about 10 seconds earlier
Temporal Resistance Slow fall and gliding through the air
Temporal Tuning A pulse that reveals traces of the past, such as objects and footprints, and points to objectives
Summon Calls a defeated Chrono Gate boss as a specter that fights beside you for a time

Icy Veins wrote that the game starts you with the Chronotector and Temporal Tuning, and that each Chrono Gate boss drops a "Movement" that unlocks one more ability; it lists the first gate's boss, the Thousandfold Piercer, as the one that unlocks Summon. The order of the other gates and their rewards is beta information from that guide only. The gates themselves are on Chrono Gates.

Specters: summoning defeated bosses

The Chronotector can turn a boss you have beaten into an ally. "Enemies you defeat don't simply perish," the Gameplay Walkthrough says: "With the power of the Chronotector, you can capture their souls and summon them as Specters in battle. The stronger the foe, the greater the power you wield." The footage shows a ghostly violet specter fighting beside the player in a Chrono Gate. In the beta, Noisy Pixel called specters "my favorite trick," with long cooldowns that make "each appearance feel special"; Icy Veins wrote that each gate drops a Specter Contract that the Sentinel Petra exchanges at the Citadel.

Testers found the Summon hard to understand, and Chrono Studio promised on Jul 30, 2025 that a new Summon screen will show "specter types, backstories, abilities, and enhancement details." The same note lists Chronotector Enhancement Points among the rewards of open-world activities.

Upgrading the Chronotector

The Chronotector grows stronger as you play. The Walkthrough says that as it grows "you will also gain greater precision and power." In the beta, Icy Veins wrote, its abilities were upgraded with Enhancement Points earned from content such as Labyrinths, spent on nodes that raised duration, cooldown and range, and could be reset for free at the Citadel. After the beta the developers named Chronotector Enhancement Points as an official reward, earned in the open world. How many points there are, and what the upgrades will be at launch, has not been published as of Oct 21, 2026.

The Chronotector in PvP and on bosses

Some Chronotector uses will be limited in PvP. The development team told Inven before the beta (June 2025) that in PvP "some use is restricted to keep things fair," while it still plays a part in map control and escapes; in the closed beta it was left usable in PvP on purpose, to collect data and feedback before setting the balance for launch (translated). Which abilities will be limited has not been announced as of Oct 21, 2026. PvP itself is on PvP.

Whether time stop works on bosses is not settled officially. Icy Veins' beginner guide for the beta says Temporal Isolation does not work on most bosses; Chrono Studio has said nothing about it.

What the press thought

Reviewers of the June 2025 build disagreed about the Chronotector. Noisy Pixel's Kyle Clark called it "where Chrono Odyssey sets itself apart" and hoped "the full game expands the Chronotector's toolkit even further." MassivelyOP's Tyler F.M. Edwards (Jun 12, 2025) was "disappointed to find them mostly just standard abilities you'd find in any MMO, like an AoE stun or the ability to glide down from heights." Players sided with Noisy Pixel: Chrono Studio's wrap-up of the beta (Jul 2, 2025) lists "The Chronotector system is unique and adds depth" among the things testers loved.
