Character Creation
Chrono Odyssey's character creator offers "gender, body types, facial features, hairstyles, makeup, scars, and much more" for one playable species, humans, and no class is gender-locked. After players built deliberately grotesque characters in the June 2025 beta, Chrono Studio promised "meaningful limitations" for the next test.
Chrono Odyssey's character creator lets you set "gender, body types, facial features, hairstyles, makeup, scars, and much more", in the Steam store's words, for one playable species, humans, and none of the six classes is locked to a gender. In the June 2025 Closed Beta, the creator came right after the class choice: SpookyFairy's recording of the first evening shows him picking the Berserker, then clicking through preset faces, from a dark-haired woman to a bearded man with braids and a shaved head, before a "Random" roll gives him a face he keeps. Testers counted the creator among the beta's best parts; it was also the source of its strangest characters, and Chrono Studio has said the next test will rein it in. What follows describes the beta, the only version anyone outside the studio has used, as of Oct 21, 2026.
Quick facts
| Options (Steam) | Gender, body types, facial features, hairstyles, makeup, scars "and much more" |
| Species | One, human (ears can be shaped to look elven, MassivelyOP) |
| Gender lock | None: every class for every character |
| Classes | Six announced, three playable in the beta |
| Beta tools | Sliders for every body part, an RGB hair color picker, tattoos sized and placed freely |
| Next test | "Meaningful limitations" promised (Jun 2025) |
| Headgear | A toggle to hide helmets and cloaks is planned (Jul 30, 2025) |
| Changing looks later | Not announced, as of Oct 21, 2026 |
The options
Past the presets, the beta's creator is a long column of sliders. MassivelyOP, which played a preview build, wrote that "every body part can be tweaked with a plethora of sliders", that hair can be set in two tones "using pretty much any colours imaginable through an RGB picker", and that tattoos "can be fully tweaked in size and placement", from "a tiny glyph on your character's cheek" to "a full body pattern" (Jun 12, 2025). SpookyFairy's run shows the same menus: wrinkles, facial outline and forehead under the face, then a head size slider ("Oh, so cute," he says before setting it back to normal), then the upper body.
There is one species. MassivelyOP found it "appears to be human", but "you can shape your character's ears into something resembling elf ears". Chrono Studio has announced no other race, and none of its posts mentions one, as of Oct 21, 2026.
Every class is open to every character. MassivelyOP noted that despite its name, the Swordsman is not male-only: "classes in CO are not gender-locked", and Kakao Games told the same site that there is no gender lock (Jun 4, 2025). Six Classes have been announced; only the Swordsman, Ranger and Berserker were playable in the beta.
Shown at GDC 2024
The creator was first shown at Epic's State of Unreal at GDC 2024 (Mar 20, 2024). Chrono Studio's five-minute talk, uploaded by Unreal Engine, puts up the slide "Create your own unique hero" over a grid of faces, then shows head-and-shoulder renders: a red-haired man with a painted stripe across one eye, a pale gray-skinned face, an older man with long gray hair, and men and women with scars and face paint. MassivelyOP described it as a "highly flexible character creator" (Apr 2, 2024).
Grotesque characters and the limits to come
Players liked the creator. Chrono Studio's community wrap-up of Jul 2, 2025 listed character customization among the things testers loved, because it "offers lots of options and creativity", and MassivelyOP called Chrono Odyssey "yet another Korean game that seems to be raising the bar for the power of a character creator".
Some players used that freedom to build monsters. Chrono Studio CEO Bae Bong-gun wrote on X after the beta: "We were shocked to see characters intentionally designed to look as strange and uncomfortable as possible, even to the point of distorting the beloved character models our team worked so hard on. It was honestly heartbreaking." He confirmed that the next test will apply "meaningful limitations" to what the creator allows (MassivelyOP, Jun 26, 2025). Which sliders will be narrowed, and by how much, has not been published as of Oct 21, 2026, and no second test has a date.
The official channel kept promoting the creator during the beta: a video of Jun 18, 2025 is titled "Character Customization: Sync level 100% - SangTae unlocked", which by its title recreates executive producer Yun Sang-tae in the creator.
Appearance, costumes and transmog
How your character looks in play depends on gear as much as on the creator. In the beta, characters had 10 armor and accessory slots, and appearance slots were "under review", Inven reported (June 2025). After the beta Chrono Studio promised a toggle to hide headgear or cloaks "allowing players to keep their stats while customizing character appearance" (Developer's Notes #2 Part 2, Jul 30, 2025).
Appearance is also what the game will sell. Yun Sang-tae told Kanon in June 2025 that the business model under consideration is "costumes used to change the appearance of equipment", mount cosmetics and "a limited range of content offered through a battle pass system", with no pay-to-win items (more on Price and Business Model). Monster Equipment, announced in Developer's Notes #5 (May 7, 2026), adds gear "that mirrors the appearance and characteristics of the monsters", and a wardrobe system for transmog is planned, Icy Veins reported from the May 2026 Discord Q&A. Gear and its looks are covered on Gear and Enhancement.
What is not known
As of Oct 21, 2026, Chrono Studio has not said whether you can change your character's face or body after creation (a barber or re-customization item), what the "meaningful limitations" will be or whether more species will come. The beta's characters were wiped when it ended.
