Combat

Chrono Odyssey uses action combat, not tab targeting: you aim your own attacks, dodge, block and parry on a stamina bar, lock on to targets, swap between two weapons mid-fight and use the time-bending Chronotector. Kakao Games says it "draws inspiration from the fluid action found in soulslike games," and the developers have reworked it since the June 2025 closed beta.

Chrono Odyssey has action combat, not tab targeting: you aim your own attacks, dodge, block and parry on a stamina bar, lock on to a target, swap between two weapons in the middle of a fight, and use the Chronotector to freeze enemies or rewind your own time. Kakao Games told MassivelyOP on Jun 4, 2025 that the combat "draws inspiration from the fluid action found in soulslike games, while enhancing it with tactical pacing and impactful hit feedback." In the official Developer Interview #1 (May 23, 2025), executive producer Yun Sang-tae says the team wanted every battle to be meaningful and "implemented parry and dodge mechanics to ensure outcomes aren't decided by stats alone." Testers in the June 2025 closed beta found the combat sluggish, and Chrono Studio has rebuilt movement, hit feedback and blocking since; nothing of the new build has been playable as of Oct 21, 2026.

Action, not tab targeting

Chrono Odyssey asks you to aim and time your own attacks rather than pick a target and run a rotation. Asked by the creator Kanon in an interview published Jun 9, 2025 whether the game is a real MMORPG, Yun Sang-tae answers that the team places "significant emphasis on action gameplay" and has built in "mechanics that require precise timing." Kakao Games added in its MassivelyOP interview that "even players more familiar with traditional tab-targeting systems will be able to enjoy the combat intuitively," and that it aimed for "a balance that offers both depth and accessibility."

Is Chrono Odyssey a Soulslike?

Chrono Odyssey borrows from Soulslike games but is an MMORPG, not a Soulslike. Yun tells Kanon that "for the open-world and combat elements, we took significant inspiration from Elden Ring," including a deliberate sense of scarcity in the open world. Later plans lean the same way: the developers promised control presets "inspired by Soulslike and MMORPG control schemes" (Developer's Notes #2 Part 2, Jul 30, 2025), and in a Discord Q&A of February 2026 Yun likened the new rechargeable HP potions to "the Estus system in Soulslike games" (Icy Veins, Feb 12, 2026).

Two weapons and the swap

Every class has three weapons, two of them equipped at once, and switching between them is the core of a fight. "Combat in Chrono Odyssey revolves around a weapon swap system, in lieu of skill chaining," Yun says in Developer Interview #1. The team even placed an elite boss early in the game so that players who use only one weapon "will struggle due to skill cooldowns," and so learn to swap. A swap also grants passive buffs, and each weapon keeps its own cooldowns (Wccftech, May 23, 2025). The weapons of each class are on Weapons.

In the beta each weapon could equip up to four active abilities, and testers complained that swaps came late, only after a skill animation ended. The developers promised to cut the swap buffer to under 1 second, add a short cooldown against accidental double swaps and make the active weapon clearer on screen. The Matrix System, announced after the beta, gives each weapon four progression paths that change its main skills.

Stamina, dodging, blocking and parrying

Defense in Chrono Odyssey is about timing and stamina. In the official Gameplay Walkthrough (Jun 12, 2025) a lone Sentinel duels a Chrono Gate boss, and the narration promises "punishing, fast-paced boss encounters" where "every strike, every dodge, demands sharp timing and precision." Every class spends stamina to dodge, sprint and block. In the build MassivelyOP previewed before the beta (Jun 12, 2025), only some weapons could block, a block lowered damage rather than stopping it, and constant dodging drained stamina fast.

Guard Crush changes blocking. Announced in Developer's Notes #4 (Jan 29, 2026): "Blocking attacks consumes stamina, and if your stamina drops to 0, a Guard Crush occurs and leaves you defenseless." A hit from the side or rear breaks a block at once, whatever your stamina, and a heavy attack causes a bigger Guard Crush that pushes you further back. The developers want you to dodge heavy blows and watch your stamina instead of holding block.

Parrying is part of the design. Yun says in the February 2026 Q&A that there are no hidden stance or poise stats: "we want players to parry, block, and dodge to actively counter enemies." The Matrix can add effects to these actions, such as building stacks on a successful block or starting a special combo after a perfectly timed one. The rules of a parry (its window, which attacks it works on) have not been published as of Oct 21, 2026.

Time powers in a fight

The Chronotector adds abilities no other MMORPG has. In the Official Gameplay Trailer of May 3, 2023, a character raises the clock-like device and a group of enemies turns to frozen white figures while she strikes. Steam's store page calls it "an artifact which allows players to stop time around monsters or rewind a character's time, enabling more dynamic combat." In the June 2025 closed beta, Temporal Isolation froze an enemy in place and Time Reversal sent you back a few seconds, which Noisy Pixel's preview (Jun 13, 2025) says "saved my skin more than once after a bad dodge." A defeated Chrono Gate boss could also be summoned to fight beside you. The full list is on Chronotector.

The closed beta: what players said

In the closed beta of Jun 20 to 22, 2025, the combat was the most debated part of the game. SpookyFairy's capture of the first 35 minutes on PC (Jun 20, 2025) shows the opening battle in a burning camp at night, the player calling out "So many things. Where am I attacking?" as the HUD fills with enemies. Chrono Studio's own wrap-up (Jul 2, 2025) lists "combat feedback and animation polish" among the main things testers wanted improved.

The developers named the cause. Some attacks, dodges and blocks "felt sluggish or disconnected," and "occasionally failing to register," which they traced to "packet desyncs between the client and the server" (Developer's Notes #2 Part I, Jul 4, 2025). They also admitted that monsters had "excessively high stagger thresholds," that crowd control lasted too short a time, and that "ranged classes are easier to play compared to melee classes" (Jul 30, 2025).

The press was split. MassivelyOP's preview found the animations "arcadey." TheGamer's Harry Alston (Jun 23, 2025) disliked how the beta looked but wrote that the "combat is otherwise excellent," and Noisy Pixel found that "every fight feels active rather than a spreadsheet of rotations."

What changed after the beta

Chrono Studio has described its combat rework in four developer notes. Nothing below has been tested by players as of Oct 21, 2026, and the developers say all of it is "subject to change."

  • Hit feedback (Jul 4, 2025 and Jul 30, 2025): motion and combat packets separated, hit reactions lengthened from 1 second to 2 to 4 seconds, crowd control raised to 2 to 4 seconds, knockback added, enemy wind-ups made clearer, and a toggle to hide other players' skill effects.
  • Hitboxes and lock-on (Dec 25, 2025): the Thousandfold Piercer and the Optio Brute now use several hitboxes that follow their animations, so their attacks land where their effects appear, and the lock-on camera sits higher.
  • Movement (Jan 29, 2026): movement no longer follows the camera, so you can back away while watching an enemy; strafe running while locked on; attacks go in the direction the character faces; sprint starts at once; the automatic roll after a jump landing is gone.
  • Impact (Jan 29, 2026): stronger hit reactions to normal attacks, Guard Crush, shorter knockbacks, and total crowd-control immunity removed from several powerful monsters so that stuns can interrupt them.
  • Consumables (Jan 29, 2026): HP potions became a permanent, rechargeable system on a dedicated key that refills on death in instanced content; food gives long buffs; special potions give short, strong ones.

The February 2026 Q&A

Yun Sang-tae answered combat questions on the official Discord in February 2026, as Icy Veins compiled them on Feb 12, 2026. Against stun locks, monsters will use a coordination system and "strike sequentially instead" of all at once. A basic attack can interrupt skills that charge or lack super armor, and a canceled skill still goes on cooldown. Monsters will read distance and attack as a group, with difficulty coming from patterns "in lieu of just inflating HP." Ranged characters get "a dedicated camera view with a targeting reticle," and sprinting breaks a lock-on so you can reposition.

Controls: keyboard, mouse and controller

Chrono Odyssey supports both a controller and keyboard and mouse, and the beta was built around the controller. Yun tells Kanon that the team focused development on controllers "because if it works properly on controllers, naturally it will work well on keyboard/mouse too," and admits this made the interface feel tailored to single-player games. After the beta the developers promised separate interfaces for each, custom key mapping and the Soulslike and MMORPG presets (Jul 30, 2025). Steam lists full controller support, and the PlayStation Store lists DualSense vibration and trigger effects. Where the game runs is on Platforms.

Frequently asked questions

Is Chrono Odyssey combat tab target or action? Chrono Odyssey uses action combat: you aim attacks, dodge, block and parry yourself. Kakao Games says players used to tab targeting "will be able to enjoy the combat intuitively," but there is no tab-target mode announced as of Oct 21, 2026.

Is Chrono Odyssey a Soulslike? Chrono Odyssey is an open-world action MMORPG whose combat "draws inspiration from the fluid action found in soulslike games," Kakao Games says. Its executive producer names Elden Ring as an influence, and its rechargeable potions work like Estus flasks, but it has parties, raids and a shared world.

Can you parry in Chrono Odyssey? Yes: the developers say they built "parry and dodge mechanics" into Chrono Odyssey and want players to "parry, block, and dodge to actively counter enemies." The exact parry window has not been published as of Oct 21, 2026.

What is Guard Crush in Chrono Odyssey? Guard Crush, added after the June 2025 beta, happens when blocking drains your stamina to 0 and leaves you defenseless; a hit from the side or rear breaks your block at once. Chrono Studio announced it on Jan 29, 2026.

Does Chrono Odyssey have lock-on? Yes: Chrono Odyssey has a lock-on, and since January 2026 you can strafe-run while locked on and sprint to break the lock. Ranged characters get their own camera with a targeting reticle.

Can you play Chrono Odyssey with a controller? Yes: Steam lists full controller support for Chrono Odyssey, and the developers are making separate controller and keyboard-and-mouse interfaces with Soulslike and MMORPG presets.
