Setera

Setera is the world of Chrono Odyssey, "a land marred by cosmic horror, twisted by time", where past and future collide and gods, humans and the invading Void meet. The June 2025 closed beta opened one region of it; the size of the launch map and its regions are not final, as of Oct 21, 2026.

Setera is the world of Chrono Odyssey: in the words of executive producer Yun Sang-tae in Developer Interview #1 (May 23, 2025), "a realm where past and future collide", where "the very laws of reality come undone as gods, humans, and unknown entities known as the Void come to a head." Kakao Games calls it "a land marred by cosmic horror, twisted by time, and shaped by your chosen fate". The player defends it as a Sentinel (see Sentinels and Story). Only one region of Setera has been playable, in the closed beta of Jun 20 to 22, 2025, and Chrono Studio is reworking the game; the launch map, its regions and its story are not final, as of Oct 21, 2026.

A wide field of tall pale grass glows in warm sunset light between low rocky hills with a few trees. In the lower left corner a rider on a white horse with a dark mane rides away from the viewer. Ahead, in the middle of the field, stands a tall pale tower of stacked tiers topped by a ring-shaped ornament. High in the hazy orange sky above it a gigantic dark pillar leans at an angle, with branch-like growths near its top. No game interface is shown.

What the makers say

Setera was built as a horror world rather than "your typical fantasy setting". In Developer Interview #1 Yun Sang-tae calls it "an eerie, imposing world that evokes a sense of dread and wonder", drawing on "the cosmic horror vibe of Prometheus" and on "a palpable fear of an encroaching threat to humanity, similar to the Zerg in StarCraft". The developers told Inven the art began from one question: what it would look like if cosmic beings of an alien civilization, like those in Prometheus, invaded a medieval world (translated). Kakao Games' Korean description says the same in short: a place where past and future collide and where gods, humans and the unknown beings called the Void are entangled (Byline Network, Jun 20, 2025).

The look mixes the real and the impossible. "The core of Chrono Odyssey is the blend of reality and unreality, the familiar and the unfamiliar," Yun says: forests, lakes and mountain ranges are made "as realistically as possible", while "structures like the Chrono Gates may appear manmade, but they're not", and "massive, otherworldly entities that defy logic and comprehension" are scattered across the land. The lighting rework of late 2025 pushed this further, making some areas darker to fit "the cosmic horror identity of Chrono Odyssey" (Developer's Notes #3, Dec 25, 2025).

Landscapes and biomes

The 2023 gameplay trailer shows Setera's range in half a minute: a cathedral under huge shapes in the sky, a rider in tall grass, a misty forest, a busy village, a tower against a sunset and sailing boats at a harbor town. The Steam store lists "many different biomes, including grasslands, snowlands, swamps, and more." After the beta the developers promised to strengthen "region-specific features such as swamps, misty forests, wildflower fields, and grasslands", with a dynamic grass system and better wind, because testers found the terrain repetitive and far from the trailers (Developer's Notes #2 Part 2, Jul 30, 2025).

Time of day and weather change what you meet. Kakao told MassivelyOP that "certain monsters only appear at specific times of day, and weather conditions can affect visibility" during movement or combat (Jun 4, 2025). The 2023 reveal promised a "living and ever-changing world, which brings new weather and environments with each season" (RPG Site, May 4, 2023); how seasons work has not been shown since.

Past eras and Time Portals

Setera can be visited in other times. In the official Gameplay Walkthrough (Jun 12, 2025), "Time Portals are anomalies formed by distortions in the flow of time" in which "you'll encounter the world of Setera anew, reimagined in entirely different timelines, whether from the past or future", with valuable items inside. The Steam store says the Chronotector lets you "explore past generations of the open world before environmental and historical events made sweeping changes to the land." Time Portals are party content, the developers wrote in Jul 2025, and one of the larger sources of Gold. More on the device is on Chronotector.

The open world

"Setera is a vast open world where exploration knows no bounds," the walkthrough says, over a misty forest, a burning field of iron rings and a vast stone hall. The Steam store promises "seamless and unrestricted exploration of any terrain", with no loading screens. Yun describes a world without a fixed main questline and with little guidance, where the Chronotector reveals hidden paths in ruins. Climbing, gliding and mounts are on Exploration and Traversal.

Setera's landmarks are meant to be read from far away. Kakao described "a giant pillar reaching the sky" and "gates endlessly pouring out monsters" among its structures (translated, Jun 20, 2025); the official Steam image above shows a huge tilted pillar hanging over the grasslands. The Chrono Gates, solo boss arenas against Void Apostles, are part of that skyline (see Chrono Gates). After the beta the developers promised landmarks for hard-to-read areas, scenic viewpoints and hidden caves (Jul 30, 2025).

Places with names

Soroma Stronghold is the one place the developers have named in a post. After the private Focus Group Test of February 2025 they wrote that it "stood out as one of the most popular areas in the game", that "there are rumors of a mysterious presence" near it, and that "someone may need to venture deep into the mist" (Developer's Notes #1, Apr 4, 2025).

Other names come from the June 2025 closed beta and are not confirmed for launch. Icy Veins' beginner guide lists the Citadel, Abandoned Farm, Outcast Encampment, First Breath Coast and Dawn Slope Settlement as beta locations (updated Mar 30, 2026). Noisy Pixel described the Citadel as "a cross-realm meeting hall where surviving Sentinels from conquered worlds gather" (Jun 13, 2025). A dark border fenced testers into the one region; players who slipped past it posted images of areas that "were not intended to be seen" (Icy Veins, Jun 23, 2025).

How big Setera is

The launch map was planned at about four times the area playable in the beta. Asked by the creator Kanon before the beta (Jun 9, 2025) how much bigger the world would be, Yun answered: "We've prepared a map that's four times larger", plus worlds for traveling to the past and future that are "nearly field-sized areas dedicated to time travel". That was the plan before the rework; Chrono Studio has not published a map or a region list since, as of Oct 21, 2026.

In the same interview Yun named the games behind the world: Chrono Trigger for time travel, the Sheikah Slate of The Legend of Zelda for the Chronotector, and Elden Ring for the open world and combat, adding: "In designing our open world, we intentionally implemented a sense of scarcity, similar to Elden Ring."

Setera is meant to grow after launch. In Developer Interview #1 Yun said the team plans "to introduce new regions", "a system where players can move between different timelines seamlessly" instead of portals, and a world where "new areas unlocking as you explore further" replace the usual clear-one-zone-then-the-next structure.

The 2020 premise

The first Setera was a different story. When Npixel revealed the game on Dec 4, 2020 (then "formerly known as Project S"), its release described "members of the special organization, Idraiginn, waging a huge war against 12 gods". That premise belongs to the 2020 pitch; the Setera, Sentinel and Void framing replaced it, and the current story is itself being rewritten (see Story).
