Exploration and Traversal

Chrono Odyssey is a seamless open world with no loading screens, built for "unrestricted exploration of any terrain": you climb, ride mounts, slow your fall and glide with the Chronotector, and step into Setera's past through Time Portals. Its map has a compass instead of a minimap, and the launch world is to be about four times the size of the June 2025 beta's.

Chrono Odyssey is a seamless open world where, in the Steam store's words, "a seamless and unrestricted exploration of any terrain is offered": you cross Setera on foot and on mounts, climb its rocks and ruins, slow your fall and glide with the Chronotector, and step into the world's past through Time Portals. The official "Gameplay Walkthrough" (Jun 12, 2025) introduces the open world over a misty night forest and a burning field, calling Setera "a vast open world where exploration knows no bounds", where you may meet "unique monsters with abnormal attack patterns". There is no fixed main questline to follow, only a compass in place of a minimap, and the developers have promised a launch world about four times the size of the June 2025 Closed Beta's. Everything here is from the beta and from developer statements; Chrono Studio is reworking the game, and nobody outside the studio has played it since, as of Oct 21, 2026.

A seamless world

The open world is one continuous space. Executive producer Yun Sang-tae told Kanon in June 2025 that the "open world" part of "open-world action MMORPG" means a world "designed so players can freely explore without any loading screens". The official Developer Interview #1 (May 23, 2025) puts it the same way: players should explore "seamlessly without any loading screens", whether "wandering the woods, cutting trees, fishing, or teaming up against powerful monsters". On the engine side, the world streams in cells through Unreal Engine 5's World Partition (see Performance and Optimization).

Yun also told Kanon that the open world borrows from Elden Ring: "we intentionally implemented a sense of scarcity, similar to Elden Ring," to give players "unexpected experiences". MeinMMO's Karsten Scholz drew the same comparison after the beta, finding that exploring rewarded him in the way Elden Ring's world does (Jun 25, 2025).

Biomes, weather and time of day

Setera's regions differ in landscape and in weather. Steam names "grasslands, snowlands, swamps, and more"; after the beta, the developer promised to strengthen "region-specific features such as swamps, misty forests, wildflower fields, and grasslands", with a dynamic grass system and wind that reacts to the player (Jul 30, 2025). The official gameplay trailer of May 3, 2023 runs through a spired city on a cliff, a figure in a field of tall grass, a dark forest, a golden plain at sunset and a sailboat in a lakeside town. Weather and time matter in play: "Certain monsters only appear at specific times of day, and weather conditions can affect visibility," Kakao Games told MassivelyOP (Jun 4, 2025). The lighting rework of late 2025 made some areas darker and others clearer, with fog and clouds that react to sunlight (Developer's Notes #3, Dec 25, 2025).

Past generations and Time Portals

The world exists in more than one era. Steam says "you can explore past generations of the open world before environmental and historical events made sweeping changes to the land." Chrono Studio's talk at Epic's State of Unreal at GDC 2024 shows how: in the editor, a rider on a white horse stands in a sunlit green valley that switches to a dark, ruined version of the same place, the engine's data layers swapping one era for another. MassivelyOP described the talk's time travel as creating "different versions of the same landscapes" (Apr 2, 2024).

Time Portals are the doors into those other eras. The Gameplay Walkthrough calls them "anomalies formed by distortions in the flow of time", where "you'll encounter the world of Setera anew, reimagined in entirely different timelines, whether from the past or future"; "though the surroundings may look familiar, the world around you shifts dramatically", and "within these portals lie valuable items to further your progression". The footage shows a party fighting through a teal-tinted ruin under a "Time Portal" banner. Chrono Studio lists Time Portals as party content and a good source of Gold (Jul 30, 2025). Yun told Kanon that the launch game will have time-travel areas that are "not just brief, short experiences" but "nearly field-sized".

The Chronotector also reads the past outside the portals. In Developer Interview #1, Yun Sang-tae says players can "trace remnants of the past or catch glimpses of the future", and while investigating ruins "manipulate time to reveal hidden paths". In the beta, this was the ability Noisy Pixel and Icy Veins call Temporal Tuning, which reveals traces of the past.

Exploring without a fixed questline

Chrono Odyssey does not march you along one story path. "Traditional MMORPGs often rely on a fixed main questline, forcing most players to follow the same path," Yun Sang-tae says in Developer Interview #1, "but we took a different approach so that players can experience the joy of discovery on their own terms." The studio also "minimized in-game guidance to encourage curiosity". Its post-beta plans name four kinds of quests: Epic Quests, Local Quests, Dynamic Quests and Chain Quests, with new Dynamic and Chain Quests "unlocked exclusively through exploring specific areas", plus hidden rewards and "rare achievements and titles exclusive to exploration" (Developer's Notes #2 Part 2, Jul 30, 2025). The Gameplay Walkthrough adds dynamic world events: "monster attacks, shifting environments, distress calls, and more".

The developers split exploration into "player-driven" and "goal-oriented" content. Player-driven means roaming Setera "at your own pace", with Labyrinths as "a prime example": rifts "filled with puzzles and moments of discovery", designed as "a break from intense combat", with "a special treasure" at the end. Time Portals, by contrast, "let players step into the past, where they can gather rare materials and items tied to the overarching story", and Bounty Hunting adds a goal to chase across the open world. The Labyrinths, Trials and Chrono Gates themselves are covered on Dungeons and Raids and Chrono Gates.

Climbing, jumping and gliding

You can climb. SpookyFairy's beta recording shows him asking "Can we jump?", then scrambling up a carved stone wall and onto rocks: "We can climb to higher ground." Testers found it hard to tell what could be climbed: they "wasted time attempting to climb non-traversable terrain", the developer wrote, so unclimbable terrain will be marked by clear features "such as rocks and cliffs at least twice the height of the player" (Jul 30, 2025). Developer's Notes #4 (Jan 29, 2026) removed the automatic roll after a jump landing, which carried characters away from where they meant to land, and made sprinting start instantly, including straight out of a jump.

Gliding comes from the Chronotector. In the beta its Temporal Resistance ability "slows your fall and cuts damage when you tumble off cliffs", Noisy Pixel wrote (Jun 13, 2025), and MassivelyOP listed "the ability to glide down from heights" among its upgrades (Jun 12, 2025). The ability names are the beta's and may change. Flying mounts and free flight have not been mentioned.

Mounts

Mounts are in the game. In the beta, Icy Veins' leveling guide says, the first mount came from a horse-taming quest; Yun Sang-tae lists mount skins among the cosmetics the game will sell (Price and Business Model). Chrono Studio has not published a list of mounts, mount speeds or how many there will be, as of Oct 21, 2026. The Steam screenshot below shows a rider on a white horse.

A wide field of tall pale grass glows in warm sunset light between low rocky hills with a few trees. In the lower left corner a rider on a white horse with a dark mane rides away from the viewer. Ahead, in the middle of the field, stands a tall pale tower of stacked tiers topped by a ring-shaped ornament. High in the hazy orange sky above it a gigantic dark pillar leans at an angle, with branch-like growths near its top. No game interface is shown.

Map, compass and getting around

Chrono Odyssey has a compass and a world map, but no minimap. Kanon told Yun Sang-tae that only 6% of the MMO players in his poll preferred no minimap; Yun answered that he also prefers one, but the team chose the compass to keep the action game's HUD clear and so that players would feel "as if they themselves were really exploring the world".

The map has been improved since the beta. Testers found the compass gave too little direction and the world map lacked terrain and altitude cues, and many did not know they could return to an inn instead of running back to town (Jul 30, 2025). By May 7, 2026, the compass had height indicators, quest markers showed on the world map, and map icons marked dungeons as undiscovered, discovered or cleared. Still planned: custom markers with a memo feature, explored and unexplored areas marked on the map, landmarks in hard-to-navigate areas, scenic viewpoints, themed caves and points of interest with hidden rewards. For some exploration quests, guidance "will only extend to a general area to encourage exploration".

How big is the world?

The launch world will be about four times the size of the beta's, Yun Sang-tae told Kanon in June 2025: "we've prepared a map that's four times larger", plus areas for traveling to the past and future. The beta held "one explorable region", fenced by a dark border; players who slipped past it posted images of areas still in development that "were not intended to be seen by players at this time" (Icy Veins, Jun 23, 2025). No map size in square kilometers and no final list of regions has been published, as of Oct 21, 2026.

The developers want the world to grow. In Developer Interview #1 they say they plan "to introduce new regions", a system where "players can move between different timelines seamlessly" instead of through traditional portals, and a world where "new areas" unlock "as you explore further" rather than after clearing the one before.
