Matrix System

The Matrix is Chrono Odyssey's skill tree, "a node-based progression system that moves away from linear paths," with four progression paths for each weapon (twelve per class) that change a weapon's main skills and combat patterns. It was announced after the June 2025 closed beta and has not been playable yet.

The Matrix System is Chrono Odyssey's skill tree: in Chrono Studio's words, "a node-based progression system that moves away from linear paths, allowing characters to be tailored to specific combat styles" (Developer's Notes #5, May 7, 2026). Each weapon has four progression paths, twelve per class, and "since primary skills and combat patterns change depending on the progression path," two players with the same weapon can fight in different ways. Matrix Points come mainly from leveling, one character cannot unlock every node, and nodes can be reset for in-game currency. The Matrix was announced on Jul 4, 2025, after the June 2025 closed beta, and no player has used it as of Oct 21, 2026; Chrono Studio says the details are "subject to change."

Why Chrono Studio added the Matrix

The Matrix replaces the simpler weapon skill trees of the closed beta. SpookyFairy's capture of the first 35 minutes of the beta on PC (Jun 20, 2025) shows that menu: the player opens a weapon's skill screen on reading "Master weapon skill" and unlocks a new skill early in the story. In the June 2025 build each weapon had its own tree, leveled by killing enemies with it, and could equip up to four active abilities, MassivelyOP reported.

Testers asked for more. In the creator Kanon's interview (published Jun 9, 2025), he tells executive producer Yun Sang-tae that the beta's skill tree "isn't exactly large," and Yun answers that the game was designed to be "easy to learn, hard to master": it starts simple, but "as you progress further, you can create your own builds and metas."

After the beta the developers admitted the problem. "All classes currently share similar roles (tank/healer/DPS), lacking distinct identity," they wrote on Jul 30, 2025. Their answer was "the Matrix system (skill tree nodes)," which "will allow players to choose specific roles for each weapon." Every class is to be rebalanced around it. The classes are on Classes.

How the Matrix works

You spend Matrix Points on nodes in each weapon's tree, and the path you follow decides how that weapon plays. Developer's Notes #5 says combat styles differ "based on the stats allocated through the Matrix, acquired passive skills, and the attributes of equipped gear," and that "meeting specialization requirements unlocks unique skills and stats that refine each combat style." Choices change "casting speeds, effects, and combat rhythm," so "even the same skill can feel distinct."

The nodes are skills, not flat bonuses. In a Discord Q&A after Notes #5, compiled by Icy Veins on May 22, 2026, Yun says the Matrix "consists of active and passive skills," and that "leveling up nodes will not simply increase damage by a fixed percentage." Adding nodes is not meant to raise a character's power ceiling but to give it a different combat identity.

The Matrix also reaches into defense. In an earlier Q&A (Icy Veins, Feb 12, 2026), Yun says it can add effects to blocking, dodging and parrying: for example, building stacks on a successful block to trigger powerful skills, or moving into a special combo after a perfectly timed block. How blocking works is on Combat.

Same weapon, different style

Every weapon is meant to support several styles. Even before the Matrix, Yun said in the official Developer Interview #1 (May 23, 2025) that "since each weapon features a distinct style, your playstyle can change dramatically depending on which combination you choose," and that each skill was designed "to have multiple functions." Developer's Notes #2 Part I (Jul 4, 2025) then promised that "even if two players are using the same weapon, their primary skills may differ," and that "the same skill can also produce different results depending on builds," whether you focus on chaining skills, switching weapons or "other tactical options."

The style can be specific. MassivelyOP reported on Jan 16, 2026 that Yun's Discord answers gave the example of weapon skills that can change entirely to become counter-focused or back-attack focused, and that weapon traits give horizontal progression while gear gives vertical. The weapons are on Weapons.

Matrix Points, resets and presets

Matrix Points come mainly from leveling. Yun says in the May 2026 Q&A that "Matrix Points can mainly be earned through character leveling," that some paths "will also require additional upgrade resources" from specific content, and that "one character cannot unlock all nodes simultaneously": the Matrix "is about choosing a direction and creating a distinct build identity." Developer's Notes #2 Part 2 also lists Matrix Points among the rewards of open-world activities. The total number of points, and whether a character's two weapons share them, will be shared "once the system is finalized."

You can respec. Matrix nodes "will be resettable through in-game currency without placing a heavy burden on players," Yun says, because the team does not want anyone to "remake their character over one wrong build choice"; low reset costs are also meant to keep one build from taking over.

Presets are planned. A Matrix Preset feature will let you switch between saved builds, for example one for PvE and one for PvP, without reassigning nodes. The number of slots and the layout have not been announced as of Oct 21, 2026.

Builds, roles and support

The Matrix is how Chrono Odyssey handles roles. Asked by Kanon whether dungeons and raids use the tank, healer and DPS trinity, Yun answers that the team focused on "a wider variety of builds," but "that doesn't mean roles like Tank and DPS, or Tank and Healer don't exist"; players can "gradually create more diverse builds based on their individuality or playstyle." In the February 2026 Q&A he adds that instead of a dedicated support class, "we are utilizing the Matrix System to allow various weapons to provide different types of support utility."

Balance and the best build

Chrono Studio balances whole builds, not single nodes. "Balance will be handled based on full builds, not individual nodes," Yun says in the May 2026 Q&A; the team will track data across content, and "if a certain build becomes too dominant, we will make adjustments on a seasonal basis." Its stated goal is "not to have one absolute strongest build, but to create a state where many strong builds can exist together." Since nobody has played the Matrix, there is no best build for any weapon as of Oct 21, 2026.

Leveling and max level

Since Matrix Points come from levels, how you level matters, and Chrono Odyssey lets you level without fighting. "Most in-game activities grant experience points, allowing players to reach max level through gathering and crafting alone," Yun says in Developer Interview #1. After the beta the developers promised to "significantly" cut the experience needed after level 10, which testers found slow (Jul 30, 2025). The level cap at launch has not been announced as of Oct 21, 2026; Noisy Pixel's preview of the beta build (Jun 13, 2025) put that build's cap at level 35. Gathering and crafting are on Crafting and Gathering.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Matrix in Chrono Odyssey? The Matrix is Chrono Odyssey's skill tree, "a node-based progression system that moves away from linear paths," with four progression paths per weapon and twelve per class. Chrono Studio announced it on Jul 4, 2025 and detailed it on May 7, 2026.

Can you respec in Chrono Odyssey? Yes: Chrono Odyssey's Matrix nodes can be reset for in-game currency, and the developers say the cost will not place "a heavy burden on players." Matrix Presets for switching saved builds are also planned.

Can you unlock every Matrix node? No: Chrono Odyssey's executive producer says "one character cannot unlock all nodes simultaneously," so each character chooses a direction.

How do you get Matrix Points in Chrono Odyssey? Chrono Odyssey's Matrix Points come mainly from character levels, with extra upgrade resources from specific content and some points from open-world activities. The total has not been published as of Oct 21, 2026.

What is the best build in Chrono Odyssey? There is no best build yet: the Matrix System has never been playable, since Chrono Odyssey's only test, the June 2025 closed beta, came before it. The developers plan seasonal balance changes so that "many strong builds can exist together."

Are there PvP talents in the Matrix? No: Chrono Odyssey's Matrix has no PvP-exclusive nodes; the developers say the same nodes are meant to work in both PvE and PvP.
