Gear and Enhancement

In Chrono Odyssey you get gear from drops or crafting "with no method having a distinct advantage," and enhancing it never breaks or downgrades an item. Endgame gearing is planned to be horizontal, monsters drop Monster Equipment in their own likeness, a wardrobe will let you keep any look, and the shop is to sell cosmetics only.

In Chrono Odyssey you can get your gear either by farming drops or by crafting it, and neither way is meant to be better: executive producer Yun Sang-tae tells the creator Kanon (interview published Jun 9, 2025) that "we're currently planning so that neither side has a definitive advantage," because leaning one way would make "the content on the other side collapse." MassivelyOP summed it up on Jun 12, 2025 as gearing "with no method having a distinct advantage over the other." Enhancing gear never breaks or downgrades it, perks can be moved from item to item, endgame gearing is planned to be horizontal, and since May 2026 monsters drop Monster Equipment in their own likeness. What players saw comes from the June 2025 closed beta; the systems have been reworked since and nobody has played the new ones as of Oct 21, 2026.

Where gear comes from

Gear comes from fighting and from crafting. The official Gameplay Walkthrough (Jun 12, 2025) says life skills span "gathering, processing, and crafting," and tells you to "collect resources, forge your own gear, and shape your journey in new ways." Yun's answer to Kanon covers both kinds of player: some will "prefer farming gear through gameplay," others "crafted items made through gathering and crafting," and both should "fully experience growth." Crafting itself is on Crafting and Gathering.

In the June 2025 closed beta, gear dropped from solo and group dungeons, Chrono Gates, world drops and world bosses, and crafters made weapons, armor and accessories, as Icy Veins' gearing guide (Feb 10, 2026) lists them. That guide also describes the beta's item layers: tier, rarity, a stat prefix, random perks, and sockets for gems on crafted items, with an Equipment Score that gated harder content. These are beta names and may change.

After the beta, Chrono Studio promised more reasons to farm the open world (Developer's Notes #2 Part 2, Jul 30, 2025): unique open-world gear with extra passive effects, monster drops with passives "designed to encourage build experimentation," and "an alternative path where players can trade in a set amount of collected materials for a specific item of their choice."

Enhancement: no breakage, no downgrade

Enhancing gear in Chrono Odyssey never destroys or weakens it. Asked by Kanon about the Korean MMORPG habit of upgrades with tiny odds that break gear, Yun says the system "is designed to provide satisfaction through enhancing gear," that "our enhancements do not include scenarios like items breaking, or perks attaching at extremely low probabilities," and that these mechanics "are entirely avoided." The official channel's "Item Enhancement System" video (Jun 16, 2025) puts it in one line: "No breakage, no downgrade, just steady progression."

In the closed beta, every enhancement succeeded. Enhancement was done at an NPC in town with Gold and materials, and the developers wrote afterwards that "obtaining enhancement materials with Gold and having a 100% success rate made the overall experience less exciting" (Jul 30, 2025). Their fix keeps the safety but changes the source: enhancement materials "will be given out as a one-time reward," and "players will now be able to find enhancement materials by exploring the world." Icy Veins wrote that in the beta, cost rose with each level rather than risk.

Enhancement is tied to everything else you do. "Enhancements are powered by materials earned through various activities like combat, exploration, and gathering," Yun says in the official Developer Interview #1 (May 23, 2025), adding that the team has "reduced the risks tied to Enhancements" and that "the Crafting and Enhancements systems are deeply connected": fighters gather materials from bosses and dungeons, while crafters can reach the top level without fighting.

Perks, tiers and extraction

The beta showed only a small part of the gear. Kanon tells Yun the beta had few gear options, and Yun answers that "only a very small portion was revealed during the beta test": the launch version has "far more detailed and extensive distinctions for levels and tiers," and "a system where unique perks can be extracted and transferred" gives "a much deeper sense of progression." In the beta, Icy Veins wrote, Trials were the place to farm strong perk pieces to move later onto better gear. Chrono Studio also promised clearer stat descriptions and rebalanced unique gear after the beta.

Horizontal endgame gear

Chrono Odyssey's endgame gear is planned to be horizontal, not a chase for one perfect item. Asked whether a few players will own rare items nobody else has, Yun says "it's closer to the latter," everyone in similar gear: the team wants to avoid items where "if I get this one item, the game is pretty much finished," and its goal "is to design horizontal progression as players reach max level," with "diverse item combinations, leading to multiple builds and new metas." He adds that he wants to avoid "tedious grinding purely for the sake of progression." MassivelyOP reported on Jan 16, 2026 that his later Discord answers paired horizontal progression through weapon traits with vertical progression through gear. Builds themselves come from the Matrix System.

Boss gear and Monster Equipment

The hardest group fights give gear of their own. In Developer Interview #1 Yun says Region Bosses, the Guardians, need several parties, and "those who overcome the challenge will earn unique equipment linked to the game's lore." After the beta, where field bosses "often felt unrewarding," the developers promised that "field bosses will now drop unique, boss-specific gear" (Jul 30, 2025). The bosses are on Bosses.

Monster Equipment goes further. Announced in Developer's Notes #5 (May 7, 2026), it is "equipment that mirrors the appearance and characteristics of the monsters found throughout the world": you "might enter battle wearing a helmet crafted from the remains of the Void or wield weapons looted from notorious bounty targets," and "it is even possible to defeat terrifying world bosses to earn gear of their likeness." In a Discord Q&A compiled by Icy Veins on May 22, 2026, Yun added:

  • Monster Equipment drops as complete pieces, "from all monsters in the game," with no materials to collect.
  • A monster drops one piece at a time, so you hunt it again to complete a set; quests and exploration will be other ways to get the looks.
  • Armor sets can be worn by every class; weapons stay locked to the classes that use them.
  • Each set is built around "unique special effects that match each monster's appearance and concept, rather than just raw stats."

The wardrobe (transmog)

Chrono Odyssey will have transmog. "Players will be able to extract the appearance of most in-game gear and apply it to other equipment via a dedicated wardrobe system," Yun says in the May 2026 Q&A; extracted looks are "purely cosmetic," so you can "run high-end gear while rocking the look of your favorite monster." A dye system for those looks is under review and "not guaranteed." A toggle to hide helmets and cloaks was promised in July 2025.

Presets

Gear and skill presets are planned. Testers had to swap gear and skills by hand to change builds, and the developers promised "gear and skill presets, allowing players to quickly switch between different playstyles" (Jul 30, 2025); Matrix Presets followed in May 2026.

Is gear sold in the shop?

No: Chrono Odyssey's shop is to sell looks, not power. Yun tells Kanon the business model is "costumes used to change the appearance of equipment, as well as mount cosmetics, and a limited range of content offered through a battle pass system," and "there is no pay-to-win." MassivelyOP reported that he repeated "no pay-to-win or enhancing items will be sold" each of the three times he was asked. Chrono Odyssey is also a paid game (buy-to-play, Kakao Games, Mar 20, 2024); its price has not been announced as of Oct 21, 2026, and the business model is on Price and Business Model.

Frequently asked questions

Can gear break in Chrono Odyssey? No: Chrono Odyssey's enhancement never breaks or downgrades gear. The official "Item Enhancement System" video says "No breakage, no downgrade, just steady progression."

How do you get gear in Chrono Odyssey? Chrono Odyssey's gear comes from drops (dungeons, Chrono Gates, field and world bosses, bounties, the open world) or from crafting, and the developers say neither has "a definitive advantage." A material exchange for chosen items is also planned.

Does Chrono Odyssey have transmog? Yes: Chrono Odyssey will have a wardrobe system that extracts the appearance of most gear and applies it to other equipment, without the original's stats. A dye system is under review.

What is Monster Equipment in Chrono Odyssey? Monster Equipment is Chrono Odyssey gear that "mirrors the appearance and characteristics of the monsters," including world bosses, announced on May 7, 2026. It drops one piece at a time and the armor fits every class.

Is Chrono Odyssey pay-to-win? Chrono Odyssey's executive producer says "there is no pay-to-win": the planned shop sells costumes, mount cosmetics, emotes and a battle pass, and no gear or enhancement items.

Is Chrono Odyssey endgame gear vertical or horizontal? Chrono Odyssey's endgame gearing is planned to be horizontal, with "diverse item combinations" instead of one best item; the executive producer says the team wants to avoid items that make players think the game "is pretty much finished."

What is the best way to gear in Chrono Odyssey? There is no proven best way: Chrono Odyssey's only test was the June 2025 closed beta, and the gear systems have been reworked since. The developers intend drops and crafting to be equal paths.
