Story

In Chrono Odyssey the player is a Sentinel defending the world of Setera from the Void, a cosmic force that has already consumed other worlds; in the June 2025 closed beta the story opened in a doomed future and sent the player back in time. The developers have since put the story through "a complete overhaul", and the new version has not been shown, as of Oct 21, 2026.

In Chrono Odyssey you are a Sentinel who defends the world of Setera from the Void, a cosmic force that has already destroyed other worlds, and you fight it by going back in time. The Summer Game Fest trailer of Jun 6, 2025 tells it in one voice: "I saw my world fall to ash, consumed by the void," it begins, and it ends with an offer, "To save what remains of our broken worlds. You need only take my hand. Return to the past where your journey awaits." That is the story as the June 2025 closed beta played it. Since then Chrono Studio has written that "the narrative of Chrono Odyssey is currently undergoing a complete overhaul" (Jul 30, 2025), and the new story has not been shown, as of Oct 21, 2026.

A gray, smoky wasteland of ash and glowing cracks. At the center stands a tall, thin figure in dark ridged armor and a spiked crown, a burning orange glow showing through its chest. Around it crowd dozens of hunched, black, clawed creatures and pale gaunt figures, the nearest ones lunging past on both sides. Tall dark stone slabs with molten seams hang in the air, and an enormous dark shape looms in the fog behind. No game interface is shown.

The premise in official words

Setera is a world where order has broken down. In Developer Interview #1 (May 23, 2025) executive producer Yun Sang-tae says that "in the absence of divine order, the boundaries between dimensions collapse, giving rise to war and invasions", and that "as the protagonist, you'll stand against formidable foes and even traverse past and future to alter the fate of Setera." Kakao Games' press release for Summer Game Fest put it as players being "called to stand as Sentinels against the encroaching Void", where "madness spreads and time fractures" (Jun 6, 2025).

The executive producer gave the theme in one sentence: "Everything in Chrono Odyssey is about how time, and the loss of it, shapes the world and its fate" (Kakao Games release, Jun 6, 2025; dashes in the original replaced with commas).

The time idea comes from Chrono Trigger. "Chrono Trigger is a game that left a very lasting impression on me," Yun says; "I was fascinated by the concept of using 'time' to prevent a cataclysmic event," which became "the foundation of Chrono Odyssey's worldbuilding, rooted in the themes of cosmic horror and spacetime."

The Void

The Void are the invaders. Yun describes Setera as "a realm where unfathomable beings loom in sight": "Invading across dimensions, the Void wield power no ordinary human can resist. Their presence lingers throughout the land, spreading ruin in their wake." He named the models: the cosmic horror of Prometheus and the Zerg of StarCraft as "a palpable fear of an encroaching threat to humanity".

The Void have taken other worlds before Setera. Noisy Pixel's preview says they "have already swallowed eleven other realms, and Setera is next in line" (Jun 13, 2025); that number comes from that one preview and the beta build. The Chrono Gate bosses, fought one on one, are Void Apostles (Wccftech, May 23, 2025); see Chrono Gates. In the open world, Void Nexus hives spawn monsters until their core is destroyed, according to the official Gameplay Walkthrough.

The Closed Beta Announce Trailer (May 19, 2025) is the story's shortest form. "The Void... has consumed us all. Is this the end?" a voice asks; then: "I shall return you to the past. You must prevail, no matter the cost. Reshape the future by your own hand." It closes on "Sentinel of Setera, I await your return..."

How the closed beta opened

In the June 2025 closed beta the story began in an apocalyptic future. The opening, as SpookyFairy recorded it on Jun 20, 2025, has soldiers closing in on "a relic that reverts time" ("To think we've come this far chasing mere myth"), with "no allies" to call on, before an ambush strikes. MassivelyOP's first impressions confirm the tutorial is "an apocalyptic future" before the player is sent back in time to try to prevent the end (Jun 12, 2025).

The opening ends with the player sent back. In the same recording a voice says of the Void, "They have claimed countless worlds. Even so, we still have a chance. The Chronotector is capable of turning back time. I shall return you to the past. Find me there. Bring word that the future has changed." Noisy Pixel wrote that the hero dies in the opening clash and is sent back twelve months, a "do-over year" (Jun 13, 2025). The Chronotector, the relic that makes this possible, has its own page: Chronotector.

From there the beta's story led to the Citadel, which Noisy Pixel called "a cross-realm meeting hall where surviving Sentinels from conquered worlds gather". The Sentinels the official channel has introduced, among them Leviona of the fallen planet Izar and Betelgeuse of Magellan, are on Sentinels. Everything in this section describes the beta build, which is being rewritten.

How the story is told

Chrono Odyssey does not tie its story to one fixed questline. "Traditional MMORPGs often rely on a fixed main questline, forcing most players to follow the same path. But we took a different approach," Yun says. With the Chronotector "players can trace remnants of the past or catch glimpses of the future", and "rather than simply completing quests, players will witness the world's changes and uncover pieces of an epic narrative." The developers list Epic, Local, Dynamic and Chain Quests among the quest types (Jul 30, 2025).

World Quests carry much of the lore. The official Gameplay Walkthrough (Jun 12, 2025) says they unfold across Setera "each with its own story, from disappearances and forbidden rituals to fallen settlements", such as "a blasphemous ritual known as the Sacrament of Destruction", in which villagers are abducted and offered as sacrifice. Some are personal, others need a party. Time Portals also reveal Setera's history, according to the developers (see Setera).

The overhaul

The story is being rewritten. In Developer's Notes #2 Part 2 (Jul 30, 2025), after the beta, Chrono Studio wrote: "The narrative of Chrono Odyssey is currently undergoing a complete overhaul. Our goal is to deliver a story that allows players to become more deeply immersed in the world and its lore." No developer post since has described the new story, and there has been no trailer in 2026, as of Oct 21, 2026. The lighting rework of late 2025 leaned into "the cosmic horror identity of Chrono Odyssey" (Dec 25, 2025).

The story is planned to continue after launch. Before the beta Yun said that "the story will continue to unfold after launch, with new regions, classes, and a wide range of content that expands the world and deepens exploration." Chrono Odyssey has no release date; Kakao Games' schedule lists it for Q2 2027 (Aug 2026), a window that has slipped before (see Release Date).

The 2020 pitch

The first premise was different. Npixel's reveal of Dec 4, 2020 described "members of the special organization, Idraiginn, waging a huge war against 12 gods", when the game was still "formerly known as Project S". That belongs to the 2020 pitch, not to the story shown in 2025 or the one being written now.
